How many of you own
fur coats? Whether you got them at a vintage store, inherited from your mom or
just bought a new one, do you get to wear it often? They don’t come cheap so
would it not be good to get the bang for your buck? (Let me translate this for
all of you non-Canadian readers: Wouldn’t you like to get most for your money? Hehehe)
Do you find yourself only wearing it to big events such as New Years, weddings
or some gala? I find that in Canada, being that we have a more casual style,
women don’t wear their fur coats on a daily basis. There is certainly also a
negative stigma in Canada associated with wearing fur, unlike Europe, but I
know way too many women who own a fur coat but don’t wear it, simply because
they too believe it’s meant only for special occasions.
Fur jackets are much
easier to make more casual, but what to do if you own an actual full length
coat? Here’s a simple answer. Why not treat it just the same as you would any
other coat in your closet? Why not treat it actually just the same as you do your
black coat or your parka? (Yes most people own and mostly wear a black coat or
a winter parka). What is amazing about fur coats is that they are perfect for
special occasions but they blend so perfectly in even the most casual of
outfits. Just think of that New Years scene from Sex & the City first movie
(yes, this is for all of you SATC fans!) when Carrie throws on her fur coat
over her pyjamas and runs to Miranda’s house in the snow blizzard. How
unexpectedly fun was that “outfit”? Yes, I know what you’re gonna say. She wore
pearl necklaces too and we, mere mortals, don’t normally sleep with pearl
necklaces around our neck. But the point is that one amazing fur coat can instantly
make even the most casual of outfits more dressed up.
My coat is a vintage one. The thing with vintage coats is that you have to make sure they fit you well so that you don’t look like your great aunt or like you went back in time to the 80s. You want to steer towards cleaner lines and avoid big shoulders. It will not be worth the money to have the shoulders fixed, so make sure they are right from the start. Today I’m wearing my vintage fur coat with my boyfriend jeans (they are not so boyfriendy loose any more with my winter weight, it actually took some effort to pull them up heheeh), my Harvard sweatshirt (yes I know I’m a touristy tourist having bought this sweatshirt, but to be honest I wanted a souvenir from my Boston trip and had wanted a burgundy hooded sweatshirt and found this one, so in short: two birds with one stone) and my Forever 21 sneakers. Of couse, fishnet stockings are always a fun element of surprise.
Are you even more casual then this? Well, good thing is that fashion today is crazy and more forgiving than ever. So if you feel like wearing your sweatpants (make sure they are your size not actually those sloppy looking ones you stole from your man), you can still top that outfit off with a fur coat.
I don’t suggest however wearing a fur coat to a club. You will have to leave it in a coatcheck. And do you feel safe leaving it there? I sure don’t. Try doing a head wrap for a fun pairing and an interesting look. Check out my Instagram page for more inspiration.
So, to summarize, the only place I would not wear a fur coat to is a club. Otherwise, the sky is the limit. So ladies, pull out your fur coats and enjoy them! And thank you for sticking till the end of this post and reading through all of my run on sentences. I greatly appreciate your patience J
Ciao!
