I read an article in
the newspaper not too long ago, about how to keep up appearances. The writer of
the article talks about attending a high society type of an event and having
been complemented on her Joe Fresh sunglasses. For those who are reading this
article but are not familiar with the brand, here is an explanation. It is an
affordable brand of clothes and accessories which started off being sold in
full service grocery stores but later opened up standalone stores. The write or the article goes to say that if
we are ever in a similar situation, we should resist the urge to share the
information that the item we are wearing is not a designer one. Furthermore, it
suggests we should never admit to not having money. This was a shock to me! I don’t understand
where the shame is in wearing affordable clothing. Not that we need approval
from celebrities, but even they wear affordable pieces. Someone like Olivia
Palermo who is one of the most photographed people at all fashion weeks, has
become known for being the best at mixing the high and the low.
Style doesn't come with money! If you look
stylish, put together and expensive on a cheap, to me that’s an even greater
accomplishment! Why be ashamed of it? I never was. I have attended many events
where everyone wore expensive suits, ties and purses, meanwhile I wore an
outfit that all together cost $100 yet received so many compliments. I agree
that you don't need to blurt out right away where you bought the item and how
much you paid (which I often do because I get awkward being given a compliment)
but when asked, why not share and be proud of your style?
My outfit today is
made up of all affordable brands and vintage pieces, and I would not think I
look cheap at all. I do however suggest not buying something just because it is
on sale or is cheap. Do look for structure, quality, proper stitching and rich
colours and materials. If you want to spend a lot of money, do invest in more
classic pieces. I love investing in shoes and bags, and this is what I save
for.
Feel free to share
your thoughts on this topic or outfit with me.
Happy weekend all!
Ciao!

What an absolute truth. If you look put together, it makes no difference what the cost of the outfit is! xo
